Lalmani Memorial Sansthan (LMS):
LMS is a registered non-governmental organization based in Madhubani, Bihar. Since 2003, we have been working to promote human rights, gender justice, education, health, livelihoods, sanitation, and environmental protection — with a special focus on empowering marginalized communities in Bihar and Jharkhand.
Lalmani Memorial Sansthan successfully constructed 1,335 individual household toilets across Dularpur, Bhalpatti, Nainaghat, and Muriya Panchayats of Darbhanga Sadar Block, Bihar — implemented under the PRAKALP program, Darbhanga.
Approach & Implementation:
The project began with extensive community mobilization and awareness drives on the importance of sanitation, hygiene, and safe defecation practices. The Sansthan’s field teams engaged with local leaders, Panchayat representatives, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and community members, particularly women, to promote ownership of the project.
A detailed household survey was conducted to identify beneficiaries from poor and marginalized sections.
Construction was carried out using quality materials and trained local masons, ensuring durability and usability. Regular monitoring and follow-up visits ensured that toilets were used properly after construction.
Impact on Society:
-
Significant reduction in open defecation in the target villages, leading to a cleaner and healthier environment.
-
Lower incidence of waterborne diseases and improvement in overall public health.
-
Increased community awareness about hygiene practices such as handwashing, safe drinking water, and waste management.
Benefits for Women:
-
Enhanced safety and dignity for women and girls, who previously faced risks when going out for open defecation, especially after dark.
-
Saved time and energy for women, which was earlier spent finding safe and private places for defecation.
-
Improved menstrual hygiene management with access to proper toilet facilities.
-
Helped women become change agents in their communities by spreading awareness about sanitation and influencing behavioral change.
Through this initiative, Lalmani Memorial Sansthan contributed to building healthier, safer, and more dignified rural communities, while advancing the goals of the national Swachh Bharat Mission.
